Protein Evolution is a New Haven based startup that uses enzymes as a catalyst to make polyester (+ other textile) waste infinitely recyclable. The promise of their Biopure technology, however, is not just in the enzyme itself – but also in the novel pre-processing techniques that they have developed to address the complexity of textile waste. At COP28 in Dubai this past December, they showcased the world’s first enzymatically recycled garments with their partners at Stella McCartney & LVMH – made from Biopure. To maintain the momentum and impact, they are now planning to build a pioneering facility in the US focused on scaling-up biological recycling.
