This year has seen the loss of all boundaries between work, home, life, and relaxation and with it has come the loss of home spaces as places to recharge and escape from work. As we move forward in 2021, with vaccines rolling out in the US and boundaries being re-established, many will need to rediscover their homes as places of relaxation. In order to help our students reconnect with their spaces, the Graduate Student Assembly has partnered with photographer and visual artist Yawen Zheng to produce a guide on using phone photography to rediscover the beauty in spaces that may feel oppressive and stifling after a year of quarantine.

Check out some of the other events the GSA put together for Spring Fling on the GSA's youtube channel: a digital performance by local musician Tim Palmieri, premiering Friday 5/14. Additionally, there will also be an in-person tour of the local gallery ArtSpace on May 20th available to a limited number of students. Register here.

Additionally, check out these two GSA sponsored playlist put together by local DJ Christie Colón to find some new music to add to your heavy rotation: the first is a collection of upbeat music from across the globe; the second is a collection of chill songs from artists local to CT and NYC. Follow the GSA on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to get updates on future events and initiatives of the organization.  You can contact the GSA via GSA@yale.edu or using the form found on our website here.

Yawen grew up in China, and spent 7 years in the US after graduating high school. She got a B.S. in Biochemistry from UC Davis and then went to San Francisco Art Institute to study photography. Initially, she was planning to move to New Haven with her husband, and work in local galleries. However, like many others, the pandemic has disrupted her plans. Her work explores the relationship between nature and humans, environmental concerns and animal rights, with the hope that her work can help others be more aware of nature and respect it.

You can see more of Yawen's work on her personal website, https://yawenxzz.wixsite.com, or on her instagram: @Rare_Yawen and @yawenxzz. You can also read an interview she did with the local art gallery ArtSpace here: https://artspacenewhaven.org/programs/artists-of-new-haven/yawen-zheng/
