Panel 1A: Plastics and Petrochemicals

This panel aims to highlight the interconnection between plastic pollution and climate change, with oceans being a nexus of impacts for both issues. The Marine Plastics and Petrochemicals Panel will feature the following panelists: 

Steven Feit (he/him) is an attorney in CIEL’s Climate and Energy Program. Steven’s work focuses primarily on climate liability and finance. Steven specializes in developing legal strategies to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for the impacts of climate change and for failures to acknowledge climate risks. He co-authored the report, Plastics & Climate: The Hidden Costs of a Plastic Planet.

Dr. Winnie Lau is a senior manager with The Pew Charitable Trusts’ preventing ocean plastics project, which aims to propose strategies to reduce the global ocean plastic pollution problem. Dr. Lau holds a bachelor’s degree in integrative biology and environmental sciences from the University of California, Berkley and a doctorate in oceanography from the University of Washington. She co-authored the recent report, Breaking the Plastic Wave: Top Findings for Preventing Plastic Pollution. 

Rafael Bergstrom is the executive director of Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, a non-profit organization that coordinates hands-on beach cleanups, educational programs, waste diversion services, and public awareness campaigns to prevent ocean plastics. He has a Master of Science (MS) focused in Natural Resources and Environmental Management from University of Hawaii at Manoa.
