  • Meditation cushions and chairs provided.
  • Sumi will provide some instruction for those who are new to meditation, as well as guide the meditation that follows.
  • Note that this is held in a Buddhist space and the instruction will be grounded in the way Buddhists do meditation. However, we won't be doing any chanting, bowing practice, or offerings as a group. 
  • Employees of Yale, only. Please do not invite students (Buddhist programming for students is offered through the Yale Buddhist Student Community).
  • Please remove shoes before coming into the room.

Directions

The Buddhist Shrine Room is located in Harkness Tower, which itself is in Branford College, more or less around 63-74 High Street.


Via York Street or High Street, find your way to Library Walk, which runs between Jonathan Edwards College and Branford College. 

At the High Street end of Library Walk, look for a black, iron entry gate. 

Swipe ID card (see below) or wait for someone to open the gate on their way in/out.

Walk through passageway into small courtyard.

Head straight and slightly left into the next arched passageway.

Walk through that passageway and look to your RIGHT.

Walk to the arched alcove with a metal gate (does not open) looking out on to High Street/Old Campus. 

Look to your right for the heavy wooden doors to Harkness Tower. The Shrine Room is right there, up four steps, inside the double doors. You made it!

Accessing Branford College (Buddhist Shrine Room)

Because the Buddhist Shrine Room is inside an undergrad residence (Branford College), employee IDs will not work on the card access points at the locked gates. To get into Branford, you have two options:

Pass Through: Wait until someone passes through one of the gates and simply step inside. The heavy iron gates close very, very slowly. You'll have plenty of time to get through.

Request Card Access: Fill out this 10-second form. Allow about a week for this to clear. The card will be authorized for Wednesdays from 11:30am to 12:30pm for the gate at the coner of Library Walk and High Street, along the Library Walk side. See this map.
