Yale Law Democrats,
Despite the challenges and tragedies that persist around the world and here at home, our elections today offered a glimmer of hope. YLDems focused its resources on races and referendums in Ohio, Kentucky, and Virginia. Not only have we succeeded in defending the governorship in Kentucky and the Senate in Virginia, but we also enshrined abortion access in the Ohio constitution, legalized recreational marijuana in Ohio, won a bellweather Supreme Court seat in Pennsylvania, and are projected to have wrested control of the Virginia House of Delegates from the Republicans to give Democrats complete control of the Virginia legislature.
Tonight's sweep represents the resounding rejection of the Republican party by the American people. These victories remind us to continue pushing for the values we hold dear--values that we believe will lead to a more just and equitable society for everybody. We celebrate the Democrats' victories and the promise of progress they bring, particularly in our fight to protect reproductive rights and bodily autonomy. At Yale Law School, we have a unique responsibility to continue our advocacy, to fight for justice, and to address the issues that most concern our communities. Tonight's results should invigorate us to press forward with even greater resolve.
However, while we revel in these accomplishments, it's crucial to remember that our world remains fraught with suffering. We are not blind to the pain and tragedy that afflict so many communities, both within and beyond our borders. It is a stark reminder that there is so much work left to be done. Our commitment to progress is rooted in empathy, compassion, and a desire to lift while we climb. We stand in solidarity with all those who are suffering, and we continue to strive for a better world where hope, progress, and peace prevail.
In the coming months, we will face unprecedented challenges to our democracy on numerous fronts. It is imperative that we hold fast to our dedication to progressive values and democratic ideals--including the priviledge of engaging with one another on the difficult issues of our time. Only by building on today's success will we be able to celebrate on the Tuesday next after the first Monday of next November (and, God willing, on January 20, 2025).
With gratitude,
YLDems Board 2023-24
