In preparation for election day on November 7th, the Yale Law Democrats will host a Voter Protection Training Session with the Election Law Society during lunch next Thursday, October 12th in SLB 120. This year, we are placing a significant emphasis on state elections that will determine whether millions of Americans will have access to health care, control over their reproductive decisions, and the right to vote. The VoPro training will be led by our Elections Chair, Ben Friedman.
Your participation is vital as we focus on some of these critical races and referendums taking place on November 7th:
1. Louisiana, Kentucky, and Mississippi: Statewide elections to determine the governor, secretaries of state, and attorneys general
2. New Jersey, Virginia, Louisiana, and Mississippi: Elections to determine the composition of their respective legislatures
3. Ohio: Referendums on abortion and marijuana legalization
4. Mayoral elections in cities across the country (including here in New Haven)
The races in Ohio and Virginia are especially important for us. In Ohio, where Republicans currently control the legislature, the governorship, and almost every other aspect of state government, the referendum to codify the right to an abortion in the state's constitution represents a rare opportunity to protect reproductive rights in a predominantly red state. In Virginia, a slim democratic majority currently under seige in the state senate stands as our last line of defense against complete Republican control.
So, please join us next Thursday to learn how you can play an important role in preserving the rights of millions of Americans. Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP here (https://cglink.me/2dA/r2231006) so we know how much food to order.
Best,
