On Tuesday, November 14th at 12pm in SLB 111, our dear friends from the National Security Group are hosting a conversation between Cliff Sloan and David Zornow about Cliff's new book The Court at War: FDR, His Justices, and the World They Made. Cliff is a retired Skadden partner now teaching at Georgetown; earlier in his career, he clerked for Justice Stevens, worked on the Iran-Contra investigation, argued five cases before the Supreme Court as part of the Solicitor General’s office, served as associate White House counsel to President Bill Clinton, and served as President Barack Obama’s special envoy for Guantanamo closure, among other things. On Tuesday, November 14th at 3pm, join the Yale Law Democrats in SLB 120 for a casual conversation with Chuck Muckenfuss '71. We'll just be hanging out, talking, and eating donuts. On Tuesday, November 14th at 4pm, the Institution for Social and Policy Studies is hosting the Online Panel Discussion: “Is Our Democracy in Danger?”. In their 2018 book, “How Democracies Die,” Harvard professors of government Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt argued that American democracy is teetering on the edge of disaster. This expert panel will analyze this claim with the latest research, discuss what does and does not worry them, and answer your questions about what may come next. The panel will consist of Jacob Hacker, Susan Stokes, Milan Svolik, and will be moderated by Alan Gerber. On Tuesday, November 14th at 5:15pm, the Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics at Yale is hosting a panel to discuss CT’s Bill on Medical Aid-In-Dying. The event will take place in person, in Marsh Lecture Hall, on the lower level of Yale Science Building at 260 Whitney Ave and on Zoom. Insights and perspectives by three speakers will be followed by Q&A. The event will also feature opening remarks by CT Rep. Josh Elliott, JD, State Representative, Connecticut, 88th District, and will be facilitated by Lori Bruce, MA, MBE, HEC-C, Associate Director at the Yale Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics. On Wednesday, November 15th at 11:30am, the School of Management will host the first public dialogue between a senior Arab government official and a senior Israeli government official since October 7th. We will be joined by UAE Ambassador to the US Yousef Al Otaiba, Israeli Ambassador to the US Michael Herzog, former Special Assistant to President Obama for the Middle East Amb. Dennis Ross, author of the Abraham Accords Jared Kushner as well as interfaith clergy such as Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, highly influential Imam of Masjid Al-Farah, and Rabbi Herbert Brockman, renowned seventh-generation rabbi of Congregation Mishkan Israel, for an open Q&A with Yale faculty and students. On Thursday, November 16th at 12pm, The LPE Student Group is excited to host a lunch event with Professor Zephyr Teachout. Professor Zephyr Teachout is a Sidley Austin-Robert D. McLean ’70 Visiting Professor of Law at Yale Law School and Senior Counsel for Economic Justice in the Office of New York Attorney General Letitia James. She is also Professor of Law at Fordham Law School. Professor Teachout teaches corporations, election law, antitrust, and prosecuting white-collar crime. Her work focuses on the intersection of corporate power and political power. A former Democratic candidate in gubernatorial and Congressional races, Professor Teachout’s career includes academic, nonprofit, and public-interest experience. On Thursday, November 16th at 4pm, professor Jacob Hacker invited us to the launch of the American Political Economy eXchange (APEX) at Yale’s Institution for Social and Policy Studies. A chance to learn more about APEX, this special event will be in the ISPS Common Room (77 Prospect Street). APEX is dedicated to the study of American democratic capitalism—the analysis of the interplay of markets and government in the United States. At the events, there will be refreshments, announcements about future APEX programming and grants, and a chance to hear about work being done by APE scholars at Yale. To RSVP, please sign up here. On Thursday, November 16th at 6pm, join Professor Gabor Rona for a discussion on the frameworks of international law relevant to the Israel/Hamas conflict, including the UN Charter, the Geneva Conventions, and International Criminal Law. Gabor Rona teaches The Law of Armed Conflict (International Humanitarian Law), International Human Rights Law, and International Criminal Law at Cardozo. The child of Holocaust survivors in Hungary, Professor Rona has worked in armed conflict settings for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and as International Legal Director at Human Rights First. On Thursday, November 16th at 6pm, the Yale College Democrats have invited us to an in-person Q&A with Deval Patrick, former Governor of Massachusetts and 2020 presidential candidate in Linsly-Chittenden Hall 317. Gov. Patrick served as the first Black Governor of Massachusetts, and beforehand, was appointed by President Clinton as the US Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice.
