Inside Faculty Hiring: Insights from STEM Search Committees

The academic job market is as competitive as ever, and hiring priorities have shifted dramatically. But many aspects haven't changed. How do you tell what is different, and what still matters?

In this session, you will hear directly from senior Yale faculty who lead and serve on faculty search committees — the people on the other side of the table. They will share current insights into how the market has evolved, what committees actually look for, how application materials are read, and how to position yourself for an academic career.

This seminar is designed for doctoral students, PhDs, and postdocs across all disciplines who are wondering:

• What are universities looking for in faculty hires now?
• How do I best prepare for the faculty job search?
• What application materials will I need, and what makes them stand out?

The session will feature short conversations with each speaker followed by an open Q&A.

About the speakers:

Sarah Demers is Chair of the Physics Department at Yale, where she is an experimental particle physicist working on the ATLAS experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider and the Mu2e experiment at Fermilab, investigating physics beyond the Standard Model. She received her AB in physics from Harvard and her PhD from the University of Rochester, and held a postdoctoral position with Stanford's Linear Accelerator Center based at CERN before joining Yale in 2009. Her work has been recognized with a Department of Energy Early Career Award, and she co-authored the book Physics and Dance.

Valerie Reinke is a Professor in the Department of Genetics at Yale School of Medicine, where her lab studies gene regulatory mechanisms in the germ line using genome-wide approaches. She earned her B.S. in Genetics from the University of Illinois and her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, and completed her postdoctoral work at Stanford University before joining the Yale faculty in 2000.
