September and October are the peak mushroom and general foraging season in New England, and wouldn't it be fun to learn about the edible fungi and flora right here in New Haven?
Native Americans have been foraging for edible and medicinal plants and fungi for thousands of years—indeed, this was one of the very first skills that the Quinnipiac people taught the earlier European settlers in New Haven in 1630s.
Co-hosted with Yale Office of Sustainability, OISS is collaborating with Karen Raczewski from Connecticut Valley Mycological Society to offer this hands-on, educational tour for beginners who are interested in learning about foraging practice in New Haven and CT. During this tour, you will learn the basics of plant and mushroom identifications, safe and sustainable foraging practices, try some vegan mushroom jerky, and look for edible fungi yourself on the day!
