Join us for our panel discussion over lunch, "Lost in Translation: Navigating Communication Across Societies," on March 1st at OISS! 

This DEIB event delves into the complexities of cross-cultural communication under the concepts "Lost in Translation" and "This is NOT What I Said" with a focus on human cognition and the history of communication in multicultural environments. Our esteemed panelists include Professor Valerie Hansen and Professor Maria Piñango.

Professor Valerie Hansen, the Stanley Woodward Professor of History at Yale, will offer diverse perspectives shaped by their experiences spanning multiple societies. Valerie Hansen's rich background in premodern Chinese and world history, coupled with extensive research across Asia, brings a unique lens to the discussion. Together, we'll explore the challenges, insights, and opportunities inherent in fostering effective communication amidst cultural diversity. 

Maria Piñango teaches how the mind and the brain store and compute language and in particular linguistic meaning. She is a Professor in the Department of Linguistics and the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program as well as Faculty Director of the Yale Education Studies Program.
