First-Time Teaching Fellows:
Join us for the Spring 2021 Teaching at Yale Day (T@YD), an event to orient first-time graduate student instructors and postdocs to the culture of teaching at Yale. This event will present strategies for teaching, give insight into student and faculty perspectives on graduate teaching and the role of the Teaching Fellow at Yale, and, introduce the many resources available to graduate teachers through the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Will I serve as a teaching fellow or acting-instructor this spring?
- Have I held this role previously at Yale?
- Have I taught online?
First-time teaching fellows and new part-time acting instructors must participate in the following components of T@YD. This is a requirement for all GSAS first-time teaching fellows and new part-time acting instructors.
- Synchronous: Engaging Students Online: Multiple Dates and Times (January 25 - 28)
- Synchronous: T@YD Small Group Discussions: January 28 at 10 a.m.
- Asynchronous: Pre-Recorded Inclusive Teaching Faculty and Staff Panel (1 hour) **Please ignore the specific date and time listed in the agenda**
- Asynchronous: Pre-Recorded Resource Introduction Videos: support opportunities across Yale (30 minutes) **Please ignore the specific date and time listed in the agenda**
Returning Teaching Fellows:
Returning teaching fellows and part-time acting instructors, especially those who have not taught online, are invited (but not required) to participate in a 90-minute workshop on how to teach online:
- Engaging Students Online: Multiple Dates and Times (January 25 - 28)
Registration:
For first-time teaching fellows or new part-time acting instructors, please register for each component of Teaching at Yale Day. The Yale Connect system will automatically register you for the asynchronous components after you register for the "T@YD Small Group Discussions." Please ignore the specific date and time listed in the agenda for the asynchronous components.

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Join your small group session to talk about inclusive teaching strategies, share ideas for the first days of teaching, and tackle common teaching challenges. These sessions, run by McDougal Teaching Fellows, will allow you to reflect on your teaching and learn from peers. The Zoom link for this session will be sent in a follow-up email prior to the event.
2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Join us for a workshop on how to engage students online. We will cover the basics of teaching on Zoom, including strategies and tools to help students connect to the class and stay motivated. Our focus is on creating community through inclusive practices, structuring class sessions to maximize engagement, and getting frequent feedback to understand what students are learning. This interactive workshop will give you a sense of what engagement online feels like through modeling and reflecting on best practices. Note: 90-minute Workshop followed by 30 minutes devoted to Questions and Answers.

All first-time Teaching Fellows are required to watch our pre-recorded "Inclusive Teaching Faculty and Staff Panel Discussion" by the end of the day on Thursday, January 28. After you watch the video, please complete the survey emailed to you from Yale Connect powered by Campus Groups. The email will be sent on Thursday, January 28. 5:00 PM – 5:30 PM
