Opening the YUPC's inaugural 2025 masterclass series, we are honored to have Professor Weiyi Yang of the Yale School of Music give our first masterclass in the Silliman Common Room, teaching three talented undergraduate performers previously selected in an event completely free and open to the public.

Weiyi Yang, professor in the practice of piano at the Yale School of Music

Pianist Wei-Yi Yang has received worldwide acclaim for his captivating performances and imaginative programming, having performed across America, Asia, Europe, and Australia. A dynamic chamber musician with a diverse repertoire, Yang is a frequent guest artist at esteemed festivals in Europe, Latin America, and the United States and collaborates regularly with distinguished soloists and chamber ensembles. Many of his performances have been featured prominently on radio and television broadcasts around the world. Yang has also curated inventive interdisciplinary projects and worked with several notable composers to prepare their works for premiere and recording.

At the Yale School of Music, Wei-Yi Yang teaches a studio of select undergraduate- and graduate-level piano students, in addition to coaching chamber music, leading departmental seminar, and chairing the DMA committee.  During the summers he also regularly performs and coaches at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival/Yale Summer School of Music. In demand beyond Yale as a dedicated teacher, Yang has presented master classes and performances across four continents.

Born in Taiwan of Chinese and Japanese heritage, Yang studied first in the United Kingdom and then in America with renowned Russian pianists Arkady Aronov at the Manhattan School of Music and Boris Berman at the Yale School of Music. In 2004, he received his doctorate from the Yale School of Music, and joined the Yale faculty the following year.

The names of the three performers will be chosen and released on here a few days before the masterclass takes place.

YUPC is thankful to Silliman College for reserving the common room for the masterclass series as well as opening its Annex Room to allow for a pre-class brunch shortly before class starts. The pre-class brunch in the Annex Room is available to the public, however, card-holders must swipe in order to get food from the dining hall. Following the masterclass, a short Q&A session will be held to answer any questions the public may have.

YUPC is deeply grateful to Yale Arts Discretionary Fund for funding this pilot program of masterclasses.
