Effervescence: YDS Student Journal of Religion

JOIN

Our Mission
Effervescence aims to provide Yale Divinity School students with an opportunity to learn more about the editing and publishing process and explore the rich diversity of religion-related topics, regardless of prior journal experience or level of disciplinary knowledge. As a student-led, peer-reviewed journal, we are open to receiving papers written by graduate students from institutions across the globe, not just at YDS. By bringing together students from a diverse range of backgrounds and interests, we hope to create a sense of academic community and advance our shared mission of the critical study of religion.

Unconditional Feedback

Throughout our 3-step review process, students will receive thoughtful, constructive feedback from our editors every step of the way, regardless of whether their paper is ultimately accepted or not.

Diversity of Perspectives

Although Yale Divinity School is a Christian-affiliated institution, our journal is open to reviewing papers from any religious tradition, even from non-religious perspectives. We strongly believe scholarship is most fruitful when diverse ideas are shared amongst one another.

Space for Growth

As a student-led journal, our editors are themselves students, meaning expertise is not a requirement to join. Working on refining papers is thus a learning experience for both parties - editors and writers.

Submission Forms

Select one of the links below (on the images) to access a Google Form to submit your paper(s). Forms will open up on January 31st at 11:00 A.M. (ET). Before submitting, please see the "Learn about our review process" link for our list of requirements (word count, citations, etc.) and other important information. Failure to meet any of these requirements will result in an automatic rejection. No exceptions.

Important Note: When submitting, please ensure that the file name is identical to the title of the paper, and that the paper itself does not contain any identifying information (e.g., your name, institution, etc.), though this will not result in an automatic rejection.

Religious Studies is the examination of religious beliefs, practices, and culture as forms of human expression. Religious Studies is somewhat of an umbrella term with a broad disciplinary reach, meaning essays belonging to this category typically deal with subjects that fall under the humanities and/or social sciences – e.g., history, literature, anthropology, archeology, sociology, psychology, etc.

Theology is similar to the Philosophy of Religion except that it takes as already authoritative particular religious commitments and sacred texts. Thus, a Buddhist may write on the assumption that Buddhism is true, as well as a Catholic that Catholicism is true, without having to justify that assumption behind whatever argument they wish to make.

Philosophy of Religion is the rational examination of religious beliefs and concepts, employing the resources of philosophical disciplines like metaphysics, epistemology, logic, ethics, etc., without taking as already authoritative any particular religious doctrines or sacred texts. Essays in natural theology, reasoning from the nature of the universe to the nature of its creator(s), may fall under this category.
