Details
First-Time Teaching Fellows and Part-Time Acting Instructors:
Join us for the Spring Teaching at Yale Day (T@YD), an event to orient first-time graduate student instructors to the culture of teaching at Yale. This event will present strategies for teaching, give insight into faculty perspectives on graduate teaching and the role of the Teaching Fellow at Yale, and, introduce the many resources available to graduate teachers through the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Will I serve as a teaching fellow or part-time acting instructor this spring?
- Have I held either role previously at Yale?
This program is a requirement for all GSAS first-time teaching fellows and new part-time acting instructors, and professional school students are encouraged to join us. If you have completed Teaching at Yale Day previously, you do not need to attend again. T@YD will have three parts:
- Zoom, synchronous: Engaging Students: (90 minutes; choose from one of three sessions on January 10th, 11th, or 12th)
- In person: Equitable Teaching Panel and Small Group Discussions, January 13th from 1 to 4 pm (panel in Humanities Quadrangle L02, 1-2:15 pm; small group discussions, 2:30-4 pm, room assignments distributed at panel).
- YaleConnect, asynchronous: Pre-Recorded Resource Introduction Videos: support opportunities across Yale (30 minutes, available on our checklist)
Returning Teaching Fellows and Part-Time Acting Instructors:
Returning teaching fellows and part-time acting instructors, especially those who have not taught online, are invited (but not required) to participate in a 90-minute workshop on engaging students:
- Engaging Students: Multiple Dates and Times (January 10 - 12)
Registration:
For first-time teaching fellows or new part-time acting instructors, please register for each component of Teaching at Yale Day.

*This session is for new TFs who missed the Spring Teaching at Yale Day events in January.*
Join us for a virtual workshop on how to engage students in class. We will cover tools and strategies that help students connect to the class and stay motivated. We will focus on creating community through inclusive practices, structuring class sessions to maximize engagement, and getting frequent feedback to understand what students are learning. Along the way, we'll model active learning practices, giving you engagement strategies that you can use in your classroom.
This will be a 90-minute Workshop followed by 30 minutes of Q&A, to be held over Zoom.

1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
This two-part session will consist of a panel on Equitable Teaching, followed by a small group discussion with other new teaching fellows and part-time acting instructors.
As our panelists will discuss, the choices we make as instructors about how we structure our classroom environment impacts how equitable those spaces feel to students.  What choices can make a classroom feel accessible to all students, given the diversity of preparation and experience they may bring with them?  What strategies and mindsets can we best employ to make our learning spaces as equitable as possible?  The faculty and staff members on this panel will share their perspectives on equitable teaching and answer any questions you may have.
In your small group discussion, which will follow immediately after the panel, you'll talk about inclusive teaching strategies, share ideas for the first days of teaching, and tackle common teaching challenges. These sessions, run by McDougal Teaching Fellows, will allow you to reflect on your teaching strategies and learn from your peers.
The panel will be held *in-person,* in Humanities Quadrangle L02 (320 York St.). You will receive your room assignment for your small group discussion directly after the faculty panel.
Masks are required for both events.
2:30 PM – 4:00 PM
**This event page is for small group check-in only. You have been auto-registered based on your participation in the faculty panel event. No action is needed at this time!**
