As an essential part of both student and instructor identity, gender is a key presence in the classroom regardless of whether it is an explicit topic of a course. In this linked ITW and ATW series on Gender in the Classroom, we will explore the fundamentals of gender dynamics in academic spaces, identify teaching practices we can implement to support student belonging, and work to understand how we can make our classrooms equitable spaces for students of all genders and presentations. In the introductory session, participants will consider the structural nature of gender and identity in the academy, and begin to identify concrete strategies for addressing them. In the advanced session, participants will expand upon this list of strategies and consider further theoretical considerations. If you have any questions, please contact Mallory Ellingson (mallory.ellingson@yale.edu) and Audrey Holt (audrey.holt@yale.edu).

This workshop series will be held in person.

ATW: Advanced Topics in Gender in the Classroom (2 of 2 sessions)

The following week in the ATW, we will expand upon these strategies and consider further theoretical approaches to gender’s role in learning spaces and the challenges and opportunities in incorporating these approaches into our teaching. Drawing on recent research on gender in academia, we’ll take a deeper dive into the importance of community, belonging, and intersectional perspectives for ensuring equitable educational outcomes across all genders. Finally, we’ll consider patterns of gendered labor in and beyond the university, from mentorship expectations to service workloads and the ongoing labor of promoting change in our institutions. Feel free to contact Mallory Ellingson (mallory.ellingson@yale.edu) and Audrey Holt (audrey.holt@yale.edu) with any questions!"

ITW: Introduction to Gender in the Classroom (1 of 2 sessions)

In this introductory workshop, we will draw on contemporary scholarship of teaching and learning to dig into structural concerns of gender and identity in teaching and in our institutions. We will investigate our own roles and identities as instructors, and begin to identify concrete strategies for addressing these structural imbalances. We’ll discuss specific gender-inclusive classroom practices and how we can effectively implement them to promote both student and instructor belonging and success, identifying some of the resources that can help us do so along the way. This initial grounding will prepare us to delve deeper in the ATW: ""Advanced Topics in Gender in the Classroom"" which will be held the following week on February 28th from 5:00-6:30PM. If you plan to attend the ATW without attending this ITW or if you have any other questions, please contact Mallory Ellingson (mallory.ellingson@yale.edu) and Audrey Holt (audrey.holt@yale.edu).

This workshop series will be held in person.
