First-Time Teaching Fellows:
Join us for the Fall 2020 Teaching at Yale Day (T@YD), an event to orient first-time graduate student instructors and postdocs to the culture of teaching at Yale. This event will present strategies for teaching, give insight into student and faculty perspectives on graduate teaching and the role of the Teaching Fellow at Yale, and, introduce the many resources available to graduate teachers through the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Will I serve as a teaching fellow or acting-instructor this fall?
- Have I held this role previously at Yale?
- Have I taught online?
First-time teaching fellows and part-time acting instructors must participate in the following components of T@YD. This is a requirement for all GSAS first-time teaching fellows and part-time acting instructors.
- Engaging Students Online: Multiple Dates and Times (August 17 - August 28)
- Inclusive Teaching Faculty and Staff Panel: August 27 at 10 a.m.
- T@YD Small Group Discussions: August 27 at 11 a.m.
- Pre-Recorded Resource Introduction: 30 minutes of asynchronous introductions to support office across Yale

10:00 AM – 11:00 AM
This faculty and staff panel will share ideas for creating inclusive classrooms, both online and in face-to-face settings. How do our choices as instructors create spaces that feel inclusive to students? How can we reach all students, given the diversity of their preparation and experience in our field? What strategies can we employ and what mindsets can we adopt to create equitable learning spaces? We will hear faculty and staff perspectives on these issues and allow time for a question and answer session.
11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Join your small group session to talk about inclusive teaching strategies, share ideas for the first days of teaching, and tackle common teaching challenges. These sessions, run by McDougal Teaching Fellows, will allow you to reflect on your teaching and learn from peers. The Zoom link for this session will be sent in a follow-up email prior to the event.
