How can we as instructors promote thoughtful and productive discussions in the classroom? What strategies can we use to encourage student engagement, especially when teaching over Zoom? In this workshop, we will identify the components of an effective class discussion, both within our disciplines and more generally. We will introduce strategies for encouraging these kinds of discussions in our classrooms, including classroom climate, course structure, preparatory assignments, and student-instructor dynamics, and will talk through some of the challenges of leading a discussion. This workshop, while taught by different facilitators, will cover the same material as the Leading Effective Discussions workshop on Monday March 22nd. Rather than attending both, you should select one. For more information, contact malena.rice@yale.edu and monique.ulysses@yale.edu).
