DESCRIPTION:At a time when there are increasing, competing demands on student attention, how can we, as instructors, structure our classroom to incentivize student engagement and focus? Moreover, how do we effectively communicate our intentions to students and build a trusting classroom community? Aside from classroom activities, the syllabus and our course policies are one main avenue for communicating these decisions to students from our device and AI policies to our participation and accessibility statements. Together, we will discuss concrete strategies for creating equitable course policies and fostering course structures that promote student engagement. \n\nJoin us for a panel and discussion event, featuring Beverly Gage, John Lewis Gaddis Professor of History and Professor of American Studies; Crystal Feimster, Associate Professor in the Department of Black Studies and the American Studies Program and Head of Pierson College; and Charles Bailyn, the A. Bartlett Giamatti Professor of Astronomy and Physics. The panelists will share their own thoughts and pedagogical practices before replying to audience Q&A. Participants are encouraged to come ready to contribute their own questions, challenges, and variations on practices related to student engagement. Lunch will be provided.
