A new semester is underway! We can’t wait to welcome fresh and familiar faces. This month’s newsletter highlights the librarians sure to welcome you the moment you walk through the door. Our “Library Lessons” introduces the first place you might find that perfect book. A calendar of library events follows.
Spotlight on the Circulation Desk
If you come to the library with a question, your first stop should be the circulation desk. Circulation librarians know the library top to bottom. They can help you find a volume in the stacks, order a book from another library, and more. But while their tasks are legion, they all agree on how to make the most of the circulation desk. Just ask! So, let’s introduce a few librarians who might help you find an answer.
Jude
Jude Morrissey is our Access Services Librarian. “I oversee all aspects of circulation – getting items checked in and out, borrowed from other libraries, and shelved,” Jude explains. “Basically I’m in charge of making sure you get what you need.” Jude is also pursuing an M.Div. degree! So, you can also discuss classes with Jude (or good swimming spots, or a certain “Chairman Meow”).
Soli
During the evenings you’ll encounter Soli Johnson, a veteran of YDL’s front desk. “We love helping our patrons,” Soli notes. “There are no dumb questions. If you’re not sure, ask us. Research is not an intuitive skill!” Soli has lived in the area her whole life. Come to her for great New Haven activities. Or to chat about “the usual nerd stuff." Or cats!
Sam
YDS students work at the front desk, too. They might help you pick up a hold or course reserve, or check out a book! Take Sam Ruff, M.A.R. in Theology. Ask him about the weirdest thing he’s ever found in a book, about his favorite work of systematic theology, or about his fiancé (hi, Kevin!). What does Sam like most about student employment at YDL? “The wonderful people,” he answers.
Lessons from the Library:
Accessing Electronic Resources
Many of the books you need can be found online. Look for “Online Book” listed as an availability option on the library catalogue (Orbis). But electronic books are CAS-protected. How do you gain access?
When on campus, simply connect to YaleSecure (link) or Eduroam (link) wifi. That’s it!
When off campus, selecting the “Online Book” option will take you to a DUO-authenticate log in page. But don’t worry. There’s an App for that! Learn more about Yale’s multifactor authentication services, and sign up for DUO, here (link). Yale even offers a complete VPN service (link).
Worried that you might not be enough of a techie? Have no fear! Our technology librarian, Graziano Krätli, is here to help. Contact Graziano (graziano.kratli@yale.edu) for library tech support.

While you can't take lunch to the library, today we take the library to lunch. And a particularly special lunch for this month! Stop by our booth at the Yale Divinity Student Club and Resource Fair throughout lunchtime. Learn more about the library. Ask research questions. Even check out a book!
