SOC Role Overview
Student Organizations Consultants (SOCs) work with the Office of Student Affairs in the Yale College Dean's Office to support undergraduate student organizations.
Each SOC is assigned a caseload of student groups, organized by activity, that they assist over the course of the academic year. The kinds of groups a SOC is assigned will depend on the consultant's previous experience, skills, personal preference, and the office's needs. In addition to serving as the main contact for their student organizations, consultants will also work on projects defined by the Assistant Director of Student Affairs, with the goal of creating a robust support system for student organizations.
Consultants are expected to be highly organized, self-directing, great communicators, and consistently proactive. They should be eager to collaborate with a wide range of personalities and seek out novel ways to improve the Yale community.
SOC Responsibilities
- Manage several categories of student organizations, which may involve:
- Lead workshops to support the growth and health of organizations
- Participate in a weekly meeting with the Assistant Director of Student Affairs to articulate the global needs of student organizations, receive ongoing training and professional development, and strategically plan campus-wide endeavors pertaining to student organizations
- Undertake short and long-term projects for the benefit of student organizations at Yale
- Support the planning and execution of the Student Organizations Bazaars in Fall, as well as Organization Training events
Weekly Tasks
In addition to supporting student groups and holding office hours, there are some recurring tasks that SOCs support during the year. These include responding to event requests, position requests, and the student.organizations@yale.edu email address. We call these "weekly tasks," as opposed to projects or meeting with student groups and/or office hours.
Here's what a standard week might look like for an SOC:

Total = 4-10 hours weekly (6 hours on average)
Meeting Coordinator (MC)
Everyone should sign up to be a meeting coordinator. Meeting Coordinators will lead the conversation at the weekly meetings and will get help from me in advance. MC's will need to create an agenda to be distributed, take meeting minutes, facilitate conversation, and distribute minutes after the meeting. Please try to sign up for two meetings total throughout the year.
