Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's most renowned works, so famous it almost need not
be introduced, but here is a quick summary to set the scene. The play centers around the
tragedy of two starcrossed lovers who meet untimely deaths in the bloodshed caused by the
feud between their two families. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet a Capulet—the Montagues
and Capulets are the rival households of the fair city of Verona which both frequently incite
violence against the other in the streets to try to assert their dominance. When Romeo and
Juliet fall in love, what was never meant to be, becomes a treacherous secret romance. In the
end, in a misunderstanding of epic tragic proportions, Romeo and Juliet each think that their
lover has died and both commit suicide. The play resolves on a note of mending, as both
families realize the depth of tragedy that has been caused by their hate, and resolve to end the
feud once and for all.
