About Us

The objective of Effervescence is to provide YDS students with an opportunity to learn more about writing, editing, and publishing, as well as explore the rich diversity of religion-related topics, regardless of prior journal experience or level of disciplinary knowledge. Submissions will fall under the following fields: Religious Studies, Theology, and Philosophy of Religion. At the start of each submission cycle, a call for submissions will be sent out to various graduate schools, divinity schools, and seminaries across the country. There will also be a limit for the number of received submissions, which will be determined based on each editor’s preferred workload (e.g., 2 editors can work on 3 papers each, so we will only accept 6 papers), thereby ensuring that our journal (1) can efficiently meet deadlines, (2) has clear expectations of its editors, and (3) won’t overburden students with work. Broadly, the review process will involve three stages: filtering, fine-tuning, and copyediting. If a submission passes through all three stages, it will then be uploaded to our club website. Once a threshold has been reached, accepted papers will then be compiled and printed for distribution to the authors, the YDS community, and anyone who wants a copy.
