Characterisation of Air Pollutant Emissions from Meat Production Sites in Urban Ghana: Implications for the Environment
Meat preparation in abattoirs often involves singeing livestock with fire from either scrap car tires or LPG, especially in low-income settings where tires are cheaper and burn hotter. However, tire combustion releases harmful particulate and gaseous pollutants. This study compared air-quality impacts of tire- versus LPG-fuelled singeing by monitoring hourly levels of CO, SO₂, VOCs, PM₂.₅, PM₁₀, temperature, and humidity at four sites in Accra.
