Procedural Overview: Registration

  • Required & Waived Courses

Each term, students are advised about the opportunity to waive certain required courses. In order to request a waiver, you should complete the Waiver form by the deadline noted in the Academic Year Calendar. Course Waiver Request

You cannot waive ARCH 6001 (Advanced Building Envelope Design), ARCH 6003 or 6004 (Building Project), Arch 6008 (Systems Integration), ARCH 6002 (Architectural Practice and Management) or any Studio.

With the exception of Structures I and II, and Introduction to Urban Design substitute courses will be provided if you successfully waive a course. If you waive Structures I or II, or Introduction to Urban Design, you may take an elective in its place.

A waiver of any required course does not reduce the number of course credits required to fulfill the program's degree requirements.

For more information about Required Courses and Course of Study, please see here: Curricular Requirements By Program. This will be updated soon!

  • Additional Credit Request

Students enrolled in the M.Arch programs generally take 18 credits each term. If you are in good academic standing, you may petition to take an extra course (21-credits total). To make this request, please submit the form found here by the deadline noted in the Academic Year Calendar: Additional Credit Request

  • Lotteries

Enrollment in all studios (except for those offered during the first year of the M.Arch I program), all Advanced Studios, all summer programs and the required M.Arch I first-year visualization class are determined the results of lottery.

All lotteries are run and managed by the Lottery Committee, a group entirely comprised of students.

During Orientation, members of the Lottery Committee will provide a tutorial on the YSOA lottery system.

  • Registration for Non-Arch Courses

You may take courses outside of YSOA for credit. For some non-Arch courses, you must have permission from the instructor. Please request permission through YaleHub for any non-YSOA course you would like to take and obtain permission. You will receive an email when the instructor acts on your permission request, but you can also check YaleHub. Once you receive approval, please complete your registration by going back into the system and adding the course to your schedule. Please do this as soon as possible as your spot may be given away until you add the course.

  • Substitution of Courses to Meet YSOA Study Area Requirements

Some YSOA courses cover material that may meet the requirements of more than one subject area. For example, you may take a course styled ARCH 4xxx that involves an in-depth study of Urbanism and Landscape, but also studies material in the History and Theory subject area. If you would like to request that a course styled to meet one requirement be applied toward another requirement, you must submit a Substitution of Required Elective form. The same form can be used to request that a course taken elsewhere at Yale University satisfy a subject area requirement. (Courses taken prior to your enrollment at YSOA or taken at outside institutions cannot be used to satisfy any of your four subject area requirements.

YSOA Summer Travel Courses and Independent Studies cannot be used to satisfy subject area requirements.
