The Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University (CEAS) was founded in 1961 and continues a long tradition of East Asian Studies at Yale. CEAS provides an important interdisciplinary forum for academic exploration and support related to the study of China, Japan, and Korea. Its mission is to facilitate the training of undergraduate and graduate students, and to foster outstanding education, research and intellectual exchange about East Asia. For more than sixty years, it has promoted education about East Asia both in the Yale curricula and through lectures, workshops, conferences, film series, cultural events, and other educational activities open to students, faculty, and the general public.

With twenty-seven core faculty and twenty-two language instructors spanning twelve departments on campus, East Asian Studies (EAST) remains one of Yale’s most extensive area studies programs. Its interdisciplinary emphasis encourages collaborative linkages across fields and departments and contributes to diversity across the curricula and in the classroom. Approximately one hundred and fifty courses on East Asia in the humanities and social sciences are offered each year.

CEAS administers Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Master of Arts (M.A.) Programs. While the B.A. Program focuses on the study of either a country or an area within East Asia, the M.A. Program focuses on the study of China, Japan, Korea, or a transnational region in East Asia. Graduates of the EAST B.A. and M.A. Programs have gone on to distinguished careers in the fields of academia, business, non-profit organizations, and government service.

East Asian Studies endowments make it possible for CEAS to offer grants and fellowships for Yale students conducting East Asian-related research and language study, as well as to support student organization programming and conferences.

Every year CEAS welcomes domestic and international scholars to campus as guest lecturers, visiting fellows, research scholars, and professors. In 1999, the Council initiated a Postdoctoral Associates Program, bringing talented individuals into the community of scholars at Yale to conduct research and teach advanced undergraduate seminars.

Study and research in EAST at Yale are supported by one of the finest library collections in the country. The Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language print resources in the East Asia Library at Sterling Memorial Library constitute one of the oldest and largest collections found outside of East Asia. The Asian Art Collection at the Yale University Art Gallery also supports classroom instruction, faculty research, and community outreach activities.

CEAS is one of the many programs and initiatives at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale.

Mission
The Council on Latin American and Iberian Studies (CLAIS) at The MacMillan Center seeks to enhance the understanding of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula through collaborative efforts focused on meaningful partnerships and exchange of ideas and academic research. The Council draws on the strengths of Yale's pioneering departments of History, Political Science, Anthropology, and Spanish and Portuguese, among others, to offer a broad array of courses, cultural events, scholarly lectures, and academic research. CLAIS organizes several colloquia series, sponsors research abroad, coordinates outreach programs, convenes international conferences, and supports faculty activities and collaborations throughout Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula.

The European Studies Council at the MacMillan Center promotes innovative research on Europe's past and present in the context of regional and global interactions. The Council collaborates with schools and departments throughout Yale to support faculty, students, and visiting scholars by sharing their interdisciplinary expertise on European affairs with the broader public. The Council aims to foster a wider understanding of Europe as both a place and an idea, reflecting the evolving nature of the region and its network of connections throughout the world.

The Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition is part of the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University. Since its founding in 1998, the Gilder Lehrman Center has been dedicated to the investigation and dissemination of knowledge concerning slavery and its legacies across all borders and all time, from the distant past through the present day. The Center fosters improved understandings of the role of slavery, anti-slavery, and the lasting harms of slavery in the functioning of the modern world. Through fellowships, workshops, public programs, and digital resources, the Gilder Lehrman Center supports scholarship, public history, and public education.
