Paper Abstract

In this paper I work to establish eco-theological place by reframing a small section of Martin Luther's Large Catechism, working both against and beyond aspects of Gordon Lathrop's liturgical cosmology, and then adapting an idea first proposed by Ched Myers in Watershed Discipleship. What finally comes into clear view is what I call a Lutheran "hydromeneutic," or method of religious interpretation grounded in hydrologic sensibilities that contribute to discipular biomimicry. I then bring together work by Luci Attala, Winona LaDuke, Alice Outwater, and Judith Schwartz, among others, in order to further develop the center and contours of this Lutheran hydromeneutic and conclude by proposing liturgical applications of it. This paper works with many sources, but does so surgically, with precision and brevity.
