Xiaohao Yang, a PhD student at the University of Michigan, specializes in soundscape and landscape perception. With a background in landscape architecture and data science, he is an interdisciplinary researcher passionate about combining data and design to explore multi-sensory perception in the built environment, aiming to support human-centered design and planning.

Paper Abstract

This study explores the acoustic ecology surrounding places of worship, holding the potential to inform environmental planning endeavors aimed at safeguarding and enhancing the health-related acoustic advantages associated with places of worship. Based on the auditory and visual features from geo-located social media data, It examines the acoustic characteristics of these areas by identifying environmental sounds and soundscape experiences. The study predicts potential sound events near places of worship and conducts sentiment analysis to understand sound perception in cities. The findings aim to guide environmental planning for enhancing health-related acoustic benefits in urban settings.
