The Cushing Society

Inspiring the next generation of neurosurgeons through scholarship, mentorship, and service.

The Cushing Society

The Cushing Society at Yale School of Medicine honors the legacy of Harvey Williams Cushing (1869–1939), one of the founding figures of modern neurosurgery and a former Sterling Professor at Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Cushing pioneered many of the surgical techniques and scientific principles that helped establish neurosurgery as a distinct and rigorous surgical discipline. Equally important was his commitment to teaching and mentorship, which shaped generations of physicians and scientists. In recognition of this legacy, the Yale Department of Neurosurgery established the Cushing Society to promote mentorship, education, and research collaboration across the Yale scientific and medical communities.

The mission of the Cushing Society is to foster a direct educational and research interface between Yale undergraduates, medical students, neurosurgery residents, and faculty. Through mentorship and collaboration, students can engage directly with neurosurgeons and scientists, building a supportive community that spans all levels of training. By connecting motivated students with basic science and clinical neurosurgery laboratories, the Cushing Society supports research initiatives that contribute to advancing the field.

The Cushing Society provides students interested in neurosurgery with opportunities for research, education, mentorship, and community building across the Yale scientific and medical communities.
