Founded in 2019, Cadence of Yale is Yale's premier competitive a cappella group. A regular participant in the annual International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA), the group is dedicated to telling stories through music as well as to collaborating with the global a cappella community. Through original arrangements, choreography, and thoughtful music curation, Cadence seeks to unlock music's communicative power with every performance.

As an SATB group whose ever-changing repertoire spans all musical genres and draws influences from classical music, folk, rock, and pop culture alike, Cadence welcomes singers of all backgrounds and abilities. In a school that focuses so heavily on tradition, Cadence aims to break the mold.

Doox of Yale is an a cappella group founded in 1952 by Basil "Duke" Henning, former head of Saybrook College. The first tenor/bass group at Yale to become all-gender, Doox prides itself on both a rich history of tradition and forward-looking communal and musical values. From Drew Barrymore's birthday party to the Steinway Club of Puerto Rico, Kylemore Abbey to the White House, Doox has sung in venues across the world, entertaining audiences with heartfelt singing and tongue-in-cheek humor.

Welcome to the Yale Institute of Sacred Music—a premier center for the interdisciplinary study of sacred music, worship, and the related arts. Partnering with the Yale School of Music and Yale Divinity School, as well as other academic and professional units at Yale, the ISM prepares its students for careers in church music and other sacred music, pastoral ministry, performance, and scholarship.

The ISM engages musicians, artists, clergy, and scholars from around the world in rigorous training and collaboration, and offers a full calendar of concerts, lectures, exhibitions, and other events.

Just Add Water, affectionately known as JAW, aims to provide the magic of musical improv comedy to the Yale Community and beyond during our on-campus shows, off-campus gigs, and semiannual tours around the United States. What's more, JAW provides an environment for Yale students to explore themselves and the world around them via improv. These tools have proven invaluable for our members, current and of legend, and explain in part why JAW is considered a second family by its members.

Living Water is Yale's first Christian a cappella group. Founded in 1979, Living Water at Yale exists to spread the Gospel, the good news of God's love and desire for relationship with all of humankind fulfilled through Jesus Christ. As a group, we spread the Gospel by sharing our testimonies of God's faithfulness, singing music that tells His story, glorifying Him through our craft, and reflecting His love and truth in our service toward Yale, New Haven, our respective home communities, and each other.

Marquand Chapel is at the heart of Yale Divinity School.

Worship is planned and led by students, faculty, and staff of both Yale Divinity School and the Institute of Sacred Music, under the leadership of the Dean of Chapel and a team of staff and students.

Worship in Marquand often draws on a wide variety of inherited Christian traditions, with the worship of many denominations being represented. Beyond that, though, we also pay attention to the rising number of people in Western society who have a lively interest in spirituality but feel no connection to traditional forms of church and worship. So Marquand is also actively engaged in original, creative, and experimental forms of worship, both for committed Christians and for those exploring the faith.

Attend Marquand five days in a row, and you may encounter an orthodox liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, a Mardi Gras worship party, a service of silent Lenten contemplation, a chapel converted into one of Dante's spheres of heaven, or a worship caf├®. As a student at Yale Divinity School, you may well have taken part in designing one of these services.

From traditional worship to brave experiment, from ancient liturgy to post-modern praise, from the heart of America to global worship, Marquand's mission is to be worshipful, educational, and ecumenical, and we look forward to welcoming you here.

The Opera Theatre of Yale College (OTYC) is the undergraduate opera company at Yale University. Our organization is entirely student-run; every show offers our members the opportunity to learn firsthand the mechanics of performing and producing an opera. Our members are singers, instrumentalists, conductors, theatre technicians, costume and set designers, choreographers, and dancers. OTYC is an immersive extracurricular experience that prepares young artists and administrators for professional life after Yale. We are committed to bringing creative, thoughtful, and innovative opera productions to the Yale and New Haven communities.

Pitches & Tones was founded in 2011 as an a cappella group independent of all other singing groups and councils. We perform a variety of member-arranged songs covering a broad spectrum of genres, often coupled with innovative choreography. Giving back is also central to our members, and we often perform at several informal charity events each year.

Shades is an all gender a cappella group founded to celebrate music of the African Diaspora. It is our objective to offer a unique, musically excellent, and spiritually enriching performance experience to audiences at Yale University and beyond. Drawing from the diverse backgrounds of our members and the oral traditions of Black people across the globe, we strive to portray authentically the complexity of the Black experience. In addition to mastering the style of our music, we develop an appreciation of its history and roots in order to educate audiences about our music's lineage.

Tangled Up in Blue (TUIB) provides a musical space for students passionate about creating and sharing folk music. Through on-campus performances and tours, TUIB (pronounced twihb) shares that love of folk music with our larger communities, from Yale itself to the towns that members are from.

Our group has repertoire that ranges from the bluegrass tunes of the Appalachians to traditional Irish ballads, the folk-rock hits of Bob Dylan to the jams of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, and Simon & Garfunkel. We sing four-part folk harmonies and accompany ourselves on guitar, banjo, fiddle, viola, mandolin, and harmonica.

Purpose: The Yale Alley Cats is a world-renowned undergraduate a-cappella group founded in 1943. Our mission is to sing wonderful music together, become better musicians through vocal performance and rehearsal, to share our music to Yale's campus and audiences across the world, and, most of all, to cultivate meaningful friendships that last a lifetime. Although initially founded as a Jazz group, our over-400-song repertoire ranges all the way from Harry Styles to Michael Jackson. As the first internationally-touring undergraduate group at Yale, The Yale Alley Cats have funded trips to Beijing, Sydney, Istanbul, and on our most recent tour, to Geneva, Doha, and Cape Town. We've had the pleasure to perform for icons such as President Barack Obama, collaborate with Grammy-winning singers and songwriters, and release several albums, with a new album coming this year! As one of Yale's oldest a-cappella groups, The Yale Alley Cats strive to uphold the strong tradition of a-cappella music that has become such a signature of Yale's student life.

As of 1981, Yale's vibrant a cappella scene featured a dozen underclassman groups of every variety. However, seven senior women felt that a key part of their musical experience was missing – a senior group. These seven seniors founded Whim n' Rhythm as an answer to the decades-old tradition of The Whiffenpoofs. Thirty-six years later, the 13 singers of Whim n' Rhythm represent the best and most experienced female musicians of the senior class.

Each year, Whim has continued to grow into a full-force presence on Yale's campus and on both the national and international stages. The group tours domestically and in the greater New England area yearly, visiting locations from New York and Los Angeles to Hong Kong and Cairo, and recently founded a full-fledged Alumnae Board to help build the group's legacy from beyond Yale's campus. Post-commencement, the group traditionally takes a five-to-seven week World Tour, hitting nearly every continent.

Prospective singers audition in the spring of their junior year to be tapped into Whim for their senior year the following fall. Whim represents nearly every underclassman singing group, a variety of residential colleges and academic majors, and hometowns ranging from coast to coast.

The Yale Glee Club is Yale's principal undergraduate mixed choir and oldest musical organization, currently in its 160th season.

Our plans for Fall 2020: Like choirs throughout the world, we will not be able to do many of the things we normally do this coming fall, but we are committed to maintaining the Glee Club as a vibrant community for Yale students who love to sing by making music together however we can, learning, serving our community, and cultivating connections with each other.
