2022-2023

The finals of the 2021-2022 Morris Tyler Moot Court of Appeals were held on April 12 in the Levinson Auditorium. Judge Stephanos Bibas of the Third Circuit, Judge Robert Bacharach of the Tenth Circuit, Judge Rowan Wilson of the New York Court of Appeals, and Justice Anne Patterson of the New Jersey Supreme Court presided. The case was Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College, which involved a challenge to the constitutionality of Harvard University's use of race in student admissions. The Thurman Arnold Prize Finals of the 2022-2023 Morris Tyler Moot Court of Appeals were held on April 4 in the Levinson Auditorium. Judge Eunice Lee of the Second Circuit, Judge Danny Boggs of the Sixth Circuit, and Judge Gregory Katsas of the D.C. Circuit presided. The case was Tyler v. Hennepin County, which challenged the constitutionality of the government’s retention of the excess proceeds from a property tax foreclosure sale. Arthrex, Inc., which involved a challenge to the constitutionality of the appointment of administrative patent judges in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. 2019-2020

The 2019–2020 Morris Tyler Moot Court of Appeals marked the switch of the competition from semiannual to annual format, with the preliminary and semifinal rounds held in the fall and the Prize Finals held in the spring.

The year's finalists were Neil Alacha '21, Peter Kallis '20, Zach Lustbader '21, and Emanuel Waddell '21. The A. Leon Higginbotham/Benjamin N. Cardozo Prize for best preliminary round brief went to Zach Lustbader. The 2020 Thurman Arnold Prize Finals, scheduled for April 7, 2020, were canceled due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The remaining prizes were shared among the finalists. The Potter Stewart Prize for best overall oral and written advocacy went to Neil Alacha, Peter Kallis, Zach Lustbader, and Emanuel Waddell. The Harlan Fiske Stone Prize for best oralist went to Neil Alacha and Peter Kallis. The Thurman Arnold Prize for best oralist went to Zach Lustbader and Emanuel Waddell.

Spring 2019

The Spring 2019 Thurman Arnold Prize Finals were held on April 6th in the Levinson Auditorium. Judges Frank Easterbrook of the 7th Circuit, Britt Grant of the 11th Circuit, and Rowan Wilson of the New York Court of Appeals presided. The case was Department of Homeland Security v. Regents of the University of California, a case involving an administrative challenge to the Department of Homeland Security's recission of the DACA program. The Fall 2018 Thurman Arnold Prize Finals were held on November 5th in the Levinson Auditorium. Judges Reena A. Raggi of the Second Circuit, James C. Ho of the Fifth Circuit, and James E. Boasberg of the District Court for the District of Columbia presided. The case was Turner v. United States, which involved whether the Sixth Amendment's right to counsel should apply during pre-charge plea bargaining. Spring 2018

The Spring 2018 Thurman Arnold Prize Finals were held on April 18, 2018, at 5:00pm in the Levinson Auditorium. Judge Cornelia T.L. Pillard of the D.C. Circuit, Judge Allison H. Eid of the Tenth Circuit, and Judge Carlton W. Reeves of the Southern District of Mississippi presided. The case was Ulbricht v. United States, which involved a Fourth and Sixth Amendment challenge to the conviction and sentencing of the alleged mastermind of the Silk Road drug trafficking website. Greenaway Jr. of the Third Circuit, and Judge Alison Nathan of the Southern District of New York presided. The case was United States v. Sanchez-Gomez, which involved a fifth amendment challenge to a district court's policy of applying restraints to criminal defendants during non-jury proceedings. The case was Lynch v. Morales-Santana, which involved an equal protection challenge to an immigration statute. The Spring 2015 Thurman Arnold Prize Finals were held on April 20, 2015, at 4:30pm in the Levinson Auditorium. Judge Steven Colloton of the Eighth Circuit, Judge Paul Watford of the Ninth Circuit, and Judge Pamela Harris of the Fourth Circuit presided. The case was Arizona State Legislature v. Arizona Redistricting Commission, which involved the Arizona state legislature's ability to bring suit against the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission and the proper interpretation of the word "Legislature" in the Elections Clause of the U.S. Constitution. Fall 2014

The Fall 2014 Harlan Fiske Stone Prize Finals were called to order on December 8, 2014, at 4:30PM in the Levinson Auditorium. Judge Barrington Parker of the Second Circuit, Judge Allyson Duncan of the Fourth Circuit, and Judge William Pryor of the Eleventh Circuit presided. The case was Elonis v. United States (poster), which concerned whether an online post must have a subjective intent to threaten in order to be illegal, both as a matter of statutory interpretation and the First Amendment. Jason Bertoldi '15 and Dan Rauch '16 represented the petitioner (brief). Zayn Siddique '16 and Joe Masterman '16 represented the Respondent (brief).

The Potter Stewart Prize for best overall oral and written advocacy was awarded to the Petitioners, Zayn and Joe. The Harlan Fiske Stone Prize for best oralist was awarded to Joe.

Spring 2014

The Spring 2014 Thurman Arnold Prize Finals were held on April 9, 2014, at 5:10 p.m. in the Levinson Auditorium. Judge Diana Gribbon Motz of the Fourth Circuit, Judge Diane S. Sykes of the Seventh Circuit, and Justice Monica M. Márquez of the Colorado Supreme Court presided. The case was Drake v. Jerejian (poster), which involved the scope of an individual's right to carry a handgun under the Second Amendment. Fall 2013

The Fall 2013 Harlan Fiske Stone Prize Finals were held on December 9, 2013, at 4:30 p.m. in the Levinson Auditorium. Judge Reena Raggi of the Second Circuit, Judge Neil M. Gorsuch of the Tenth Circuit, and Judge Stephen A. Higginson of the Fifth Circuit presided. The case was National Labor Relations Board v. Spring 2013

The Spring 2013 Thurman Arnold Prize Finals were held on April 22, 2013, at 4:30 p.m. in the Levinson Auditorium before the Honorable Thomas Griffith (DC Circuit), the Honorable Christopher Droney (Second Circuit), and the Honorable Scott Matheson (Tenth Circuit). Fall 2012

The Fall 2012 Morris Tyler Moot Court of Appeals at Yale Law School was held Monday afternoon, Dec. 3, in the Law School auditorium, when four Yale Law School students presented oral arguments in the case, Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, Inc., a real case that comes before the Supreme Court this term.

Judge Rosemary Barkett of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, Judge Merrick Garland of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and Judge Jeffrey Sutton of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit presided.

The Potter Stewart Prize for best overall written and oral argument to Bridget Fahey '14 and James Dawson '14, who successfully argued for the respondent (brief), the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, Inc.

Dawson received the Harlan Fiske Stone Prize for best oralist as well, and the judges also praised the performances of Katie Mesner-Hage '13 and Michael Shih '14, who argued for the petitioner (brief), the state of Arizona.

The Potter Stewart Prize for best overall written and oral argument was awarded to Michael Murray and Lindsay Eyler, who argued for the Respondent. Joseph Minta, who argued for the Petitioners, received the Harlan Fiske Stone Prize for best oralist.

Fall 2006

The Fall 2006 Harlan Fiske Stone Prize finals were held on December 11, 2006, before a panel of Circuit Judges William A. Fletcher (9th Cir.), Diana Gribbon Motz (4th Cir.), and Jeffrey S. Sutton (6th Cir.). The case was Massachusetts v. Environmental Protection Agency, addressing whether the EPA Administrator has the authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act and whether the Administrator may decline to issue emissions regulations for motor vehicles based on non-statutory policy considerations. Justin Cox ('08) and Richard Re ('08) represented the Petitioner (brief); Eric Citron ('07) and John Hughes ('08) argued for the Respondent (brief).

The judges awarded the Potter Stewart Prize for best overall team to Respondents Eric Citron and John Hughes and the Harlan Fiske Stone Prize for best oralist to Justin Cox.

Spring 2006

The Spring 2006 Thurman Arnold Prize finals were held May 1, 2006, before a panel of Circuit Judge Raymond C. Fisher (9th Cir.), Senior Circuit Judge Laurence H. Silberman (D.C. Cir.), and New York Court of Appeals Associate Judge George Bundy Smith ('62). The case was Moises Sanchez-Llamas v. Oregon, addressing whether and how the Vienna Convention's provisions for consular rights should be enforced in U.S. courts. Fall 2005

On December 12, 2005, the Morris Tyler Moot Court welcomed an esteemed four-judge panel of Circuit Judges Merrick Garland (D.C.
