BIOMES: Dr. Fushcia Hoover, Assistant Professor of Environmental Planning, UNC Charlotte, presents "Green Infrastructure Planning, Social Ecological Research and Black Feminist Ecologies"

About the Seminar:
Black women and femmes have and continue to make important and unique contributions when it comes to addressing the ecological harms, changes and shifts under climate change. These contributions reflect a particular intersectional identity and specifically, a Black feminist ecology, that is undermined, undervalued, and forgotten. However, Black women and femmes already organize and build community in ways that advance policies that benefit all communities, thus we can and should use Black feminist ecologies to direct and determine environmental planning practices and policies. Dr. Hoover’s current project aims to document Black Feminist Ecologies as praxis among Black women and femmes (BWF) in the state of North Carolina. I hope to highlight the unique environmental and community stewardship and caretaking practices that result from and in response to the unique perspectives held by Black women and femmes due to their intersectional experiences. This work will explore how Black women and femmes create homeplaces for ecological resistance, pathways for moving these homeplaces into the public sphere, thus building a Black feminist ecological praxis.

Over the last twelve years, the Yale School of the Environment has held a weekly seminar series, called BIOMES, which has been the School’s flagship forum for bringing cutting-edge research and impactful work to the community. BIOMES stands for ‘Bridging Issues & Optimizing Methods in Environmental Studies”
