Moving to a new country is exciting—and also confusing! In the first few weeks, there are many new things to learn about and accomplish. Visit this page of OISS website to review the To-Do List to help you navigate your first two weeks in New Haven.
Alycia and Juliana's Arts and Culture Tip of the Week -
Beginning September 10th and running until October 8th, the Connecticut Center for Arts and Technology will open an exhibit featuring the winning artwork of community members who submitted work inspired by the theme “Emerge.” Artists were asked to submit pieces that spoke to our “resilience as we push through to the other side of the Covid-19 Pandemic.” This is a great opportunity for you to reflect on the impact this past year and a half has had and engage with how artists are viewing, understanding, and interpreting this moment!
Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen needs your help! Join us in preparing meals that will be distributed to those struggling with food insecurity in the New Haven area. This is an in-person event following strict safety protocols.
Come by for some free coffee or tea (bring your own mug), meet up with friends or attend an upcoming event! Masks must be worn in the Center except when eating.
The hours for the start of the semester will be Monday-Friday from 9am-8pm. We hope to be open on weekends soon.
If current health conditions worsen, we may need to close the Center.
Looking for healthy food options in New Haven? Meet us outside Claire's Cornercopia for a walking tour downtown! We'll visit several local favorites and enjoy some FREE samples. Find your new hangout and meet some new friends! Rain date on September 12th.
Kick off the year with other grad families at East Rock Park. We'll meet new people, play games, and eat Pepe's pizza. Find us near the playground in College Woods.
Want to liven up your space? Come to the McDougal Center and paint a pot with us in the courtyard! We will be painting terracotta pots and planting plants to take home. Pots, paints, and plants will be provided!
Love scavenger hunts? Want to explore New Haven and meet some new people? Join McDougal GSL for Geocaching: a global scavenger hunt that uses GPS to find hide and seek containers.
Meet us at the island on Broadway (56 Broadway, New Haven, CT 06511) to start our hunt for Geocaches downtown New Haven. We will be walking from the Island to the Yale Art Museum and end with free ice cream at Arethusa!
[SECOND YEAR GRAD STUDENTS ONLY] We know that the second years did not get to enjoy many in-person events last year. But now it's different! Here's your chance to meet everyone else who joined Yale in 2020! Mingle with your peers in person in the McDougal Center courtyard. We will provide yard games (cornhole, kanjam, giant jenga, and more!) and yummy snacks. You can look forward to low-stakes ice breakers and a rocking good time. Encourage your cohort mates to register and let's get to minglin'!
Please join us in giving a helping hand to Michelle's House.
Michelle's House, which is home to the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America CT, is holding their 30th annual walk and James Barber 5K Run and Bike. They need your help to support this event.
