20th anniversary screening! A research psychologist fights back when sinister forces steal a dream-viewing device and bring nightmares to life. This anime thriller merges sci-fi and surrealism into a psychedelic kaleidoscope. Kon’s final feature is a “dizzying, ambitious excursion into the subconscious” (Andrea Gronvall) and “a showcase of the limitless power of the imagination” (Peter Howell). In Japanese with English subtitles. Introduction by Kirsten Seuffert. 35mm print from the Yale Film Archive.
