Dear Prospective Student,
We are the affinity group at Yale Law School for veterans and active duty service members, and we are excited that you are interested in joining our community! Our Veterans Association includes officer and enlisted veterans, reservists, and active duty future JAGs. We think Yale Law School could be the right place for you and we strongly encourage you to apply.
Our experiences at Yale have exceeded our expectations. Yale Law School’s reputation as one of the finest law schools in the country is wholly deserved—the faculty, students, and opportunities here are simply outstanding. We have found great support and friendships through the Veterans Association, which hosts regular community-building events, and provides mentorship to first-year students.
All members of our Association remember the challenges of separating from the military and applying to law school. We understand that the law school application process can be intimidating, but you should trust that your military background offers an important and valued perspective to the law school community. YLS is looking for applicants like you—do not self select out by not applying.
The admissions office sent you a packet with some of our sample application materials. We hope that these materials can provide useful examples of how previous military applicants found success. It is important to remember, however, that the most important quality of your application is the authentic presentation of who you are and why you want to come to law school.
Please let us know if we can be of any assistance. Past veterans helped all of us through our transition and application process, and we are happy to pay it forward.
Best wishes,
Yale Law Veterans Association Board
