  • How do veterans benefits work at YLS?

The process for both GI Bill and Vocational Rehabilitation (CH. 31) benefits at YLS is extremely easy:

    1. Get your Certificate of Eligibility on the eBenefits website. To do this, navigate to the Post-9/11 GI Bill Statement of Benefits page and click on "Check Your GI Bill Benefits."

    2. Make sure your service records are on file with the Buffalo regional office of the VA.

    3. Send your digital Certificate of Eligibility to the Yale Law Financial Aid Office (Jackie Outlaw, jacqueline.outlaw@yale.edu). The POC will reach out to you for a certification form, which you can also find here.

    4. YLS takes care of the rest! VA will make payments directly to YLS.

  • What does the GI Bill cover at YLS?

The full GI Bill combined with the YLS Yellow Ribbon Program covers:

    • 100% tuition
    • Your comlete health insurance through the Yale Health Plan. It does not cover health insurance for spouses or dependents.
    • A one-time textbook/supplies stipend. Students using Vocational Rehab will receive full funding for textbooks and supplies throughout their time at the Law School
    • Monthly BAH (GI Bill) or a monthly stipend (Voc Rehab).
  • When will I receive my first BAH payment or Voc Rehab Stipend?

If you're eligible for BAH, you should receive your first BAH deposit around August 31 / September 1. You will likely move into your apartment between August 1 – 15 to prepare for 1L orientation, we recommend that you budget now for that first month of rent.

  • Will I receive BAH assistance continuously throughout the academic year?

Both BAH and Voc Rehab payments are pro-rated every month based on the number of days that Yale says that you're enrolled in classes. When classes are fully in session (such as in September) you will receive BAH for the full month. But in the Winter and Summer, you'll receive pro-rated payments based on the number of days class is actually in session.

  • What are the term dates and exam dates?

    • The YLS Academic Calendar can be found here.
    • The tentative exam schedule can be found here (scroll down to "Exam Schedules").
  • How do I know what textbooks to buy?

    • Professors will post a list of required textbooks in their syllabi (hopefully with time to get them before class begins!). You can also find required textbooks here once you've received your schedule.
