About Us
This student organization seeks to develop the resources, community, and support for aspiring student actuaries and undergraduates interested in or seeking to pursue actuarial science, the study of risk management and its application to companies and clients. To achieve this long-term goal, a combination of organizational meetings, information gathering, resource gathering and dispensing, and academic and professional development activities are all necessary. As Yale currently has no other actuarial science programs or organizations, this organization serves as an incredibly rare opportunity for students interested in the profession to build important connections and receive structured assistance in the form of advice or financial support on certification exams, related internships, academic coursework, and other relevant components of actuarial science. Relevant Majors: S&DS, MATH, Applied MATH, ECON, and other quantitative majors. All others welcome to join too, but reach out to our officers if you have questions/concerns about whether Actuarial Science is right for you.

FAQs
What exactly is Actuarial Science?
It's a bit hard to define precisely, but essentially the study of risk management, particularly in regards to financial and business-related risks, using a variety of knowledge and skills drawn from statistics, mathematics, finance, etc. Many Actuaries work in insurance, finance, banking, consulting, and more. In our meetings and workshops, we go more in depth as to what that looks like exactly, so don't worry if it seems unclear right now. Learning is part of the process! If you want to do more research on your own, though, you can check out this website: https://www.beanactuary.org/what-is-an-actuary/
Why should I pursue Actuarial Science?
If you're considering Actuarial Science, you've probably already seen the several other careers that you could pursue. These include Data Science / Data Analyst, Quantitative Finance, IB, and others. We present to you the following case for choosing Actuarial Science: a high salary with various benefits (work-life balance, support for exams, etc.), while not being overly difficult to break into. The biggest drawback we've seen in other careers with similar skill requirements is the demand for long work hours, lack of stability, and extreme difficulty just to get an entry-level role. Not to mention the stress that continues after you get the job. That's not to say you shouldn't pursue these fields; after all, we want you to be the most successful, and indeed, some people are well-suited that environment. But it's something to consider based on what you value. For Actuarial Science, getting an internship looks like an application and only 1-3 interviews, typically behavioral. For another field (e.g. finance-related), it might look like an Online Assessment (OA) and many difficult, technical interviews consisting of brain teasers, puzzles, and various challenges. Then, possibly having to meet a certain performance criterion to avoid a layoff. If you're ever interested in having a discussion or are wanting to hear more about whether Actuarial Science is right for you, please feel free to reach out. Happy to talk!
Why should I join YUASA?
You should join our organization if you're even slightly interested in being an Actuary. It will literally boost your chances. We offer workshops, study resources, and financial support for exams while you're a student. Also, we invite Guest Speakers from different companies to come on campus and talk, which not only builds on your knowledge, but also gives the opportunity to build connections with the company. This is especially helpful when you're recruiting for internships/full-time.
Is there a cost to joining YUASA?
No. There are no membership fees or dues.
Is YUASA competitive?
Nope. At least not between members. We've made a commitment to focus on fostering a spirit of cooperation rather than making members compete with each other. All are welcome to join. The real challenge is to yourself! How many Actuarial exams can you pass before you graduate?
How can I contact YUASA?
You can either directly email the President or use the bottom of this website page to send a message. It sends it to their inbox. If they don't respond in a few days, feel free to follow up or email another officer, as they probably missed it.
How can I stay in the loop?
To stay up to date with what's going on, join our organization to be added to the mailing list. You can also reach out directly with any questions/concerns. In general, email announcements are more reliable than anything we put on YaleConnect because things can change due to scheduling, etc.
