The Bioethics Interest Group (BIG) is a student-run interest group, serving as a resource for medical students, and students across Yale University, who are interested in the ethical challenges faced by patients and by those who work in healthcare and medical research. In collaboration with the Program for Biomedical Ethics, we host lectures, discussions, and small group seminars with experts from across the country. “Cafecitos at YSM” is devoted to sharing the intricacies of Latin America’s cultures with the YSM community through gatherings which immerse participants in Latin customs, beliefs, and perspectives with reverence and substance. These cultural exposures effect a layered approach to immersion, as they include authentic food, drink, and sweets both from local Latin American businesses and homemade by Cafecitos members, sharing of music with deep cultural importance, and talks by speakers with lived experience and expertise in various aspects of Latin culture. These approaches lay a foundation of community that foments an atmosphere of openness and reflection, enriching the learning process. The gatherings themselves will cover diverse topics imperative to understanding and therefore delivering competent care to Latin American patients, including language, immigration, gender, labor, and economic dynamics within these communities.

CineMed uses film to help future clinicians see medicine through a broader and more human lens. The project invites students to slow down and reflect on the values and relationships that shape clinical work. Through curated screenings and guided discussions with invited expert guests (healthcare providers and/or patients), participants explore themes such as communication, empathy, decision making, identity, and the realities of working within complex medical systems to broaden their own clinical perspectives. The screenings serve as starting points for honest conversation about what it means to care for others and to be part of a clinical team. The Yale School of Medicine has a mission to "Educate and inspire scholars and future leaders who will advance the practice of medicine and the biomedical sciences." These scholars pursuing advances in the biomedical sciences are spread across departments at the School of Medicine, the School of Arts and Sciences, and Yale-New Haven Hospital. They span a range of professional levels, including medical and graduate students, medical residents and post-docs, early-career investigators, and tenured professors. There are few mechanisms to unite this community of scholars and to bridge the horizontal boundaries of discipline and the vertical boundaries of professional hierarchy. Emerging Biomedical Scholars at Yale aims to provide a unique, unifying service to this broad community. Its mission is to:

1) Serve as a hub to foster professional and social interactions across departments and stages of professional development, in order to facilitate scientific synergies and exploration and professional mentorship.

2) Serve as a central clearinghouse of useful information and resources for a wide range of biomedical scientists, including: core facilities and technical expertise, training in skills such as grant and fellowship writing, other opportunities for education and career development, and means to help promote sustainable work/life balance.

For a very long time, surgery was not included in the discussion of how healthcare could be improved worldwide, especially in the most remote corners of the earth. Only recently has surgery been brought to the table, being called the "forgotten step-child" of global health by Paul Farmer and many others. At the very core, global surgery is "a field that aims to improve health and health equity for all who are affected by surgical conditions or have a need for surgical care, with a particular focus on underserved populations in countries of all income levels, as well as populations in crisis, such as those experiencing conflict, displacement, and disaster." Important to this effort is all aspects of surgery, including anesthesia, OB/Gyn, and nursing.

Currently, 5 billion people around the world do not have adequate access to basic surgical care. Worse yet, the disparity in surgical care is stark, with the poorest 30% of the world receives only 3-6% of operations, whereas the richest 30% receives almost 75%. 17 million people die and 77 million DALYS are lost each year because of this, greater than HIV/AIDS, malaria, and TB combined. Our global economy could lose 21 trillion dollars between 2015 and 2030, with 12.3 trillion lost by low- and middle-income countries, so the lack of surgical care worldwide is also a significant detriment to the progress of humanity. 2.2 million more surgeons, anesthetists, and OB/Gyns (SAOs) and an investment of $350 billion dollars is needed to prevent this from happening, with a goal to raise the operative volume of countries to 5,000 per 100,000 population, meaning an increase of 143 million more surgical procedures per year. It can be easy to get lost in the numbers, but ultimately, health is a human right, and no one should have to live with a condition that would have been treated had they been born somewhere else.

So the bigger question becomes how we address this need for surgical care. In the past, this has almost exclusively involved efforts such as week-long surgical missions and the provision of money/resources in order to acutely work on the problem. However, the field has evolved with the creation of the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery, which called for a more in-depth analysis. Their major report from spring 2015 outlined an approach through investigation, innovation, and implementation, pointing out that research, technology, and capacity-building efforts were necessary to advance the field. In addition, they did a thorough economic analysis which showed that upscaling the number of surgeons and operations alone will not work - an economic approach that helps decrease catastrophic health expenditure for patients and their families is necessary. As the Lancet Commission encompasses almost 110 different countries, efforts have now been set on working at the highest level - with governments, health ministers, and financial officers - to enact changes in policy and infrastructure for whole countries to improve people's access to surgical care.

Ultimately, whether you are interested in surgery/anesthesia/OBGyn, global/public health, economics/finance, policy, technology/engineering, education/empowerment, statistics/research, or any combination of these, you have a very significant contribution to make to this growing field. And no matter how young or old you are, no matter how little or how much you can contribute, your involvement in global surgery is incredibly necessary and valuable.

The mission of the Immersive Reading Club (IRC) is to create space and time for students to read deeply, together. Most book clubs focus on meeting to discuss the book, but this is a reading club. Rather than meet to discuss, we meet to read, carving out time in a rare tech-free and distraction-minimal environment.
At least two types of sessions: longer sessions will focus on reading a particular book, and the more-frequent short sessions will simply carve out time to read whatever you've been meaning to. By engaging with the humanities and unplugging from technology, we hope to reduce burnout in medicine.

Psychedelic substances have been used in cultures around the world for millennia, often in spiritual, ceremonial, and healing contexts. Recently, the FDA has granted psilocybin, LSD, MDMA, and other psychedelic compounds “breakthrough therapy” status for treating depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Yale has a long history investigating the therapeutic potential of psychedelic treatments for a broad range of conditions, beginning with studies of LSD in the 1950s. Our mission is to support students in learning about psychedelic medicine, connecting with professionals in the field, and engaging in research, clinical, and advocacy opportunities related to psychedelic therapies. In addition to scientific discourse, the Psychedelic Medicine Interest Group welcomes discussions on the historical and global use of psychedelic substances, ethical approaches to research and implementation, and sociocultural and policy challenges associated with psychedelic medicine. Social prescribing is a model of care delivery that enables health professionals to formally prescribe non-clinical community activities including the arts, movement, nature, and service (volunteering) to improve patient health. In February 2024, Lt. Governor Bysiewicz and Gov. Lamont announced the Social Connection Campaign to combat loneliness and social isolation in Connecticut. By leveraging Connecticut's community-based arts and culture organizations, social prescribing can catalyze a new way of addressing biopsychosocial determinants of health. Our mission is to support students in learning about and engaging with Connecticut's emerging ecosystem around social prescribing. The Social Prescribing Interest Group serves as a hub for students to advocate for and integrate holistic, community-based interventions (e.g. arts programs, outdoor activities) with patient care. Our goal is to support the implementation of social prescribing models in New Haven and across the United States.

The Yale Cancer Biology Training Program provides a unique cancer-focused training experience intended to develop the next generation of cancer scientific leaders. Training covers the genetic and biological underpinnings of cancer, the pathway to development of new therapies based upon this knowledge, and the practical challenges in applying these new therapies in cancer clinics.

The Skin of Color Working Group (SOCWG) is an open, inclusive student-run organization. By skin of color, we refer to skin types typically represented by Fitzpatrick phototypes I-VI. During the academic year, we organize POCUS workshops for MD and PA students to train them in using and interpreting ultrasound as a bedside tool in clinical medicine, provide new faculty-led advanced POCUS training to the next generation of POCUS enthusiasts, conduct POCUS image review sessions with faculty instructors, and facilitate career exploration opportunities with residents, fellows, and faculty across different specialties, who are passionate about POCUS.

¡Hablemos Juntos! is a student-run initiative aimed at equipping Yale health professional students with the linguistic and cultural skills needed to better communicate with Spanish-speaking patients. First started by Yale medical students and piloted with peers in the preclinical phase of training, ¡Hablemos Juntos! offers in-person workshops taught by native Spanish speakers, during which learners discuss clinical cases in Spanish, learn key medical Spanish terminology, and practice communication skills. The initiative has also overseen the development of a novel web-based application that allows learners to interact with an AI-powered Spanish-speaking patient and practice using Spanish in a range of clinical scenarios. By providing health professional students with opportunities for structured instruction and self-directed learning, ¡Hablemos Juntos! ultimately aims to bolster the delivery of linguistically and culturally sensitive care for Spanish-speaking patients in the New Haven community.
