Mission
As an umbrella organization we seek to unite the dance groups on campus, bring together the New Haven and Yale dance community and to work for more administrative support for dance on campus. We believe that there should be maximum cooperation within the campus dance community and that as the dance community grows it is important for us to work with the administration to accommodate their needs of rehearsal and performance space.



The Alliance for Dance at Yale is an umbrella organization which seeks to unite the dance groups on campus, bring together the New Haven and Yale dance community and to work for more administrative support for dance on campus. We book rehearsal space at Payne Whitney Gym for all undergraduate dance groups, and we host the Festival of Dance Groups during Opening Days for freshman. The Alliance automatically includes all members of dance groups on campus and is led by a board of directors who are elected by the larger membership each year. This board consists of 5 positions all of which may be held by 1 or 2 people: executive director publicity director treasurer outreach coordinator secretary Additionally a representative from each dance group who wishes to participate in ADAY activities will serve as a direct liason to the board and help in the planning and production of ADAY events. As an umbrella organization we seek to unite the dance groups on campus, bring together the New Haven and Yale dance community and to work for more administrative support for dance on campus. We believe that there should be maximum cooperation within the campus dance community and that as the dance community grows it is important for us to work with the administration to accomodate their needs of rehearsal and performance space. There are no membership requirements, though people wishing to hold office within ADAY must be currently enrolled undergraduates. Elections are held yearly in January. Interested candidate submit a candidate statement to the Alliance and are elected by majority vote.

Yale's Asian American Collective of Theatermakers (AACT) aims to provide a centralized and welcoming social space for Asian American theatermakers at Yale that will (1) attract would-be Asian American theatermakers who would otherwise be deterred from doing theater for lack of a clearly defined Asian American theater community; and (2) enable Asian American students interested in making theater to network and collaborate with other Asian American artists.

The Asterisk* Journal of Art and Art History is concerned with providing an outlet for critical discourse around art for undergraduates, whether it be through practice or theory. Based in New Haven at Yale University, Asterisk* is one of the few peer-reviewed, intercollegiate, bi-annually published art and art history journals at the undergraduate level. We are dedicated to highlighting art historical narratives shedding light on topics that are often left to the margins. As part of our selection process, we reach out to over eighty different universities in search of high-quality, subversive essays and artworks that provoke new ways of thinking. We try to publish bi-annually with workshops, meetings and events hosted throughout the semester.

Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Yale was founded in the fall of 1998 by a group of undergraduate students dedicated to the expression of Mexican culture and traditional folk dance. Since its founding, the group has had the privilege of performing at numerous cultural and educational events at Yale, throughout Connecticut, and elsewhere in the Northeast. As the only Mexican folk dance group on campus, Ballet Folklórico does not hold auditions. Our goals are both diverse and ambitious: while providing an outlet for the exploration of our heritage, we seek to enrich students' cultural knowledge, and serve as a resource for greater Connecticut communities as well.

The Berkeley College Orchestra is dedicated to the promotion of a musical presence on the Yale campus and the greater Connecticut area. To achieve this goal, the BCO provides a place for students to study and practice the performance of music without grades and seeks to foster a community of musicians with similar goals. To this end, BCO holds weekly rehearsals and three free public concerts during the school year and one educational concert for New Haven public school students.

Founded in 2019, Cadence of Yale is Yale's premier competitive a cappella group. The Davenport Pops Orchestra strives to provide the undergraduate community with a venue for student musicianship, specializing in uniquely pops repertoire. Doox of Yale is an a cappella group founded in 1952 by Basil "Duke" Henning, former head of Saybrook College. The first tenor/bass group at Yale to become all-gender, Doox prides itself on both a rich history of tradition and forward-looking communal and musical values. From Drew Barrymore's birthday party to the Steinway Club of Puerto Rico, Kylemore Abbey to the White House, Doox has sung in venues across the world, entertaining audiences with heartfelt singing and tongue-in-cheek humor.

The purpose of the Guild shall be to maintain a regular ringing schedule of the Yale Memorial Carillon in Harkness Tower during the academic year; to further the musical education of its members by, among other things, meeting regularly as a group to perform for each other and visiting other carillons at least once a year; to teach and train underclassmen in the art of carillon-playing during the annual Heel and to elect new members into the Guild after auditions at the end of Heel; to organize a carillon concert series each summer; to perform at official functions of the University; to maintain and further good relations with carillonneurs at other carillons around the world, the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (GCNA), and the national carillon schools in Europe; to maintain and enlarge the library of music sheets and books and literature on campanology; and, to encourage general interest in the bells and the art of carillon-playing at the University and in New Haven.

Our mission is to bring free musical performances, instrument education, and opportunities to perform to underserved neighborhoods across New Haven. Through partnerships with New Haven public schools, healthcare centers, and other local organizations, Harmony Healing aims to make music accessible to all, regardless of age, background, or economic status. Indigo is concerned with providing Yale students with opportunities to engage in the visual arts. Step is an African American dance form developed first by South African miners as an alternative to drumming, a previously banned activity. There is a vibrant step dance tradition in the South, but in the Northeast many people have never even heard of it. Steppin' Out aims to share this great history and culture with the Yale community, both by making the otherwise unknown style visible in the first place and by celebrating the diversity of our membership.

Tangled Up in Blue (TUIB) provides a musical space for students passionate about creating and sharing folk music. Through on-campus performances and tours, TUIB (pronounced twihb) shares that love of folk music with our larger communities, from Yale itself to the towns that members are from.

Our group has repertoire that ranges from the bluegrass tunes of the Appalachians to traditional Irish ballads, the folk-rock hits of Bob Dylan to the jams of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, and Simon & Garfunkel. We sing four-part folk harmonies and accompany ourselves on guitar, banjo, fiddle, viola, mandolin, and harmonica.

Our idea is to create a hybrid organization of sketch and standup with an impact not only on campus, but beyond. Purpose: The Yale Alley Cats is a world-renowned undergraduate a-cappella group founded in 1943. Our mission is to sing wonderful music together, become better musicians through vocal performance and rehearsal, to share our music to Yale's campus and audiences across the world, and, most of all, to cultivate meaningful friendships that last a lifetime. Although initially founded as a Jazz group, our over-400-song repertoire ranges all the way from Harry Styles to Michael Jackson. As the first internationally-touring undergraduate group at Yale, The Yale Alley Cats have funded trips to Beijing, Sydney, Istanbul, and on our most recent tour, to Geneva, Doha, and Cape Town. We've had the pleasure to perform for icons such as President Barack Obama, collaborate with Grammy-winning singers and songwriters, and release several albums, with a new album coming this year! UNITY is Yale University’s only student group dedicated to traditional Korean music and performing arts. Founded in 1991, UNITY has performed at events across the Yale community and greater Northeast region. UNITY is best known for its performance of samulnori, a form of percussion music rooted in native Korean religious and cultural practices. Samulnori features four instruments: the buk, janggu, jing, and kkwaengwari. The mission of UNITY is to share the beauty and energy of Korean traditional music to both Korean and non-Korean audiences.

As of 1981, Yale's vibrant a cappella scene featured a dozen underclassman groups of every variety. However, seven senior women felt that a key part of their musical experience was missing – a senior group. These seven seniors founded Whim n' Rhythm as an answer to the decades-old tradition of The Whiffenpoofs. Thirty-six years later, the 13 singers of Whim n' Rhythm represent the best and most experienced female musicians of the senior class.

Each year, Whim has continued to grow into a full-force presence on Yale's campus and on both the national and international stages. The group tours domestically and in the greater New England area yearly, visiting locations from New York and Los Angeles to Hong Kong and Cairo, and recently founded a full-fledged Alumnae Board to help build the group's legacy from beyond Yale's campus. Post-commencement, the group traditionally takes a five-to-seven week World Tour, hitting nearly every continent.

Prospective singers audition in the spring of their junior year to be tapped into Whim for their senior year the following fall. Whim represents nearly every underclassman singing group, a variety of residential colleges and academic majors, and hometowns ranging from coast to coast.

WORD is Yale's oldest and hypest spoken word group. We are a community of writers dedicated to sharing performance poetry with the Yale community, New Haven, and beyond. We organize performances on campus, conduct workshops with K-12 schools, and create collaborative art with other student groups. As a resident group of the Afro-American Cultural Center at Yale, we recognize the Black legacies that gave rise to spoken word and aim to extend those legacies to upcoming writers of all backgrounds during their four years at Yale.

Our club’s mission is to teach, share, and celebrate the art of pen spinning—while building a community in the process. Our goals this year include holding biweekly practices, hosting workshops for beginners, and increasing campus awareness through demonstrations. We are starting to ramp up our club activities (meetings & workshops) and are excited to say that many of these goals have been met. Moving forward, we want to produce high-quality online tutorials on Youtube to make the experience better for both our current members, high schoolers, and any other interested people; additionally, we want to make this club as accessible as possible to the Yale community & increase the presence of pen spinning on campus. Increased access to funding would improve production quality and access to specialized pens—alongside consistent and structured meetings to ensure member engagement.

Our purpose at YUCO is to bring oft-ignored chamber orchestra masterpieces into the limelight at Yale. Works like Strauss's Metamorphosen, Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta, and the Lark Ascending are often excluded from the repertoire of current Yale ensembles. This is due to both instrumentation restrictions in the case of YSO, as well as the limits of coordinating personnel for repertoire that require a high technical and musical level.

YUCO is also a space for introducing new works for chamber orchestra into the repertoire. YUCO provides a space for up-and-coming composers to premiere their works in a welcoming, pre-professional environment, one that supports recordings for competitions and auditions. In addition to composers, YUCO can also be a meaningful stepping stone for conductors and instrumentalists on their way to graduate school and on their career paths.

YUCO is, first and foremost, a performance ensemble dedicated to fulfilling its members' musical dreams and introducing repertoire to musicians and audience members alike that would have never played or heard otherwise.

One of the hallmarks of Yale College is its renowned musical community. Outstanding instrumental musicians on campus frequently perform together in such well-regarded ensembles as the Yale Symphony Orchestra and the Yale Concert Band. Pianists, however, are required only in small numbers for these groups and may therefore find themselves somewhat isolated in their musical pursuit. Therefore, the Yale Undergraduate Piano Collective exists to promote greater musical and social cohesion among the undergraduate pianists at Yale. In particular, the YUPC organizes "studio classes," wherein pianists to play for each other to receive feedback and encounter fresh perspectives, and public performances, with an emphasis on collaborative repertoire for four, six, and eight hands.

Yaledancers is Yale's oldest premier dance company. Since 1973, YD has provided Yale student dancers with access to high-caliber training and performance opportunities. Yaledancers stages semesterly company shows and performs at other University functions, all of which showcase original student choreography. In addition to rehearsals for these shows, YD meets twice weekly for classes, taught by both company members and industry professionals.

The company practices and performs a wide variety of dance styles, including classical and contemporary ballet, jazz, contemporary, tap, musical theatre, modern dance, and more. The organization strives to bring dancers from diverse backgrounds together to share their art with the Yale community. YD also provides a social outlet and sense of community for members, creating lasting friendships among both graduate and undergraduate students.

Yaledancers is a founding member of the Alliance for Dance at Yale. ADAY serves as a collective forum for dance groups at Yale and provides classes and support to the Yale dance community.
