The Theme

Integration of the Multi-Regional Input-Output models from satellite observations to behavioural response of economic agents, a quantitative modelling approach to support policy making

Practical case: A quantitative assessment of the EU agreement to fight deforestation and forest degradation driven by EU production and consumption.

Summary

To address global challenges such as the Sustainable Development Goals and the climate objectives of the Paris Agreement, quantitative modelling tools to support policymaking are required. The present review of existing models highlights important gaps in the existing capacity to model the three aspects of sustainability at the global level. Existing models are sectoral in focus, have limited ability to capture cross-cutting issues, and do not capture novel products or transformative land use practices well. Efforts have been made to develop linkages between models, but some key issues remain unresolved.

In an approach aiming to solve those remaining issues, I will present an adaption of an industrial ecological tool (Multi-Regional Input-Output model), improving the spatial resolution and the land use change (with the integration of satellite observations) and connecting to the economic model (with Computable General Equilibrium) to present a quantitative modelling approach to support policy making.

Then I will use this extended model to quantitatively assess the impact of the EU agreement to fight deforestation and forest degradation driven by EU production and consumption and propose different governance recommendations based on the results.
