The Talk

Today, many elements are labeled as critical. Some of these elements, namely lithium and cobalt, are essential to the electrification of the vehicle fleet. But exactly how much lithium and cobalt will we need in the future?

In this week's Friday Lunchtime Talk, Dr. Alessio Miatto will discuss the topic of critical materials and provide a detailed analysis of the potential lithium and cobalt needs for the U.S. economy.

The Speaker

Dr. Alessio Miatto is an Industrial Ecologist who specializes in material flow analysis. The core focus of his research is to quantify the physical demands of various economic sectors and relate this information to resource depletion, supply chain disruption, and waste generation. Among his publications, Alessio co-developed a material flow analysis manual to be employed by national statistical offices of emerging economies.

At Yale, in addition to being a research scientist, he teaches the course Material Flow Analysis for the Circular Economy. Before joining Yale in 2018, Alessio obtained his Ph.D. in environmental engineering from Nagoya University and an M.Eng. and a B.Eng. in architectural engineering from the University of Padova.
