Material Energy Nexus: Small Group Discussion

led by the Kimball Smith Series at Yale

on February 24, 2023, 12pm-1pm at the Yale Center for Industrial Ecology, 380 Edwards St.

Registration by Thursday, Feb 23 at 2 pm Required

The Event

Join the Kimball Smith Series and the Center for Industrial Ecology for lunch and small-group discussions on critical materials required for the energy transition. During this lunch, attendees will discuss technical, social, and political issues raised during the "Material Energy Nexus" symposium, taking place two days prior (February 22) at the Yale School of the Environment.

Individuals of all disciplines and levels of expertise are encouraged to attend. We hope to promote conversations and connections between those in STEM fields and those in social science/policy fields.

This event is part of the

Material Energy Nexus Symposium

February 22nd from 5 - 8 PM

This is an interdisciplinary event focused on the critical materials required for the energy transition. There will be expert keynotes, a dynamic panel discussion, and dinner. Solar panels, wind turbines, EV batteries, and energy storage all require critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements. Mineral production has social and environmental challenges, domestically and globally. We will explore these issues along with geopolitics, trade and recycling opportunities of critical materials, and the energy transition.

This event is presented by

Yale Center for Industrial Ecology

The Center for Industrial Ecology at the Yale School of the Environment was established in September 1998 to provide an organizational focus for research in industrial ecology. The Center brings together Yale staff, students, visiting scholars, and practitioners to develop new knowledge at the forefront of the field. Research is carried out in collaboration with other segments of the Yale community, other academic institutions, and international partners.

The Yale Kimball Smith Series

The Yale Kimball Smith Series tackles issues at the intersection of science, technology, ethics, and global affairs—ranging from nuclear weapons risks to artificial intelligence policy. Kimball Smith events feature panels with experts in scientific and political questions. We also host interdisciplinary small-group discussions among attendees. The Kimball Smith Series is sponsored by the Yale Physics Department and Wright Laboratory, and we partner with programs including International Security Studies and the Political Science Department.
