Student Groups

Important information for all Student Organizations, Journals, and Student-led Conference Groups.

YLS student groups must comply with the University's Equal Opportunity Statement and adhere to the responsibilities and policies outlined below and within this handbook.

All YLS student groups must be open to all YLS students.

  • Responsibilities

Yale Law School approves official student organization status through a specified process (outlined within this handbook) and the granting of this recognition is a privilege, not a right. Students are expected to strictly adhere to all University and Law School policies. For cases where a student organization is responsible for the violation of any University or Yale Law School policy, it may result in an organization’s loss of official recognition, loss of use of campus space for events, and consequent loss of funding opportunities. Violations may also subject individuals to discipline under other University or School regulations.

  • Membership

Student organizations must submit their board officers to OSA each year by the first week of classes. It is the responsibility of the student organization as well as individual board members to keep lists up-to-date with OSA and maintain any lists on Yale Connect or external websites.

  • Training

At least one board member of each recognized student group (including Student Organizations, Journals, and Student-led Conference groups) must attend OSA's leadership trainings.

  • Events

For any students or student groups planning events, the policies and procedures set forth on the Event Planning page should be read and followed.

  • Group Email Accounts

Details provided under Communications and Licensing.

  • Neutrality

As a general practice, OSA does not cosponsor events with student groups.
OSA is committed to equitable support of all student groups. To that end, members of OSA are unable to mediate conflicts between, or internal to, student groups. Should members of a student group need support in this area, they may consult former student group board members or faculty advisors, and engage in restorative practices through University resources. Members of OSA can assist by connecting students to these resources.

  • Statements & Petitions

Please keep in mind that statements posted by a student organization may have implications for every member of the group. Members of student organizations should always consult with the group’s full board before posting a public statement or signing onto a petition on behalf of a student organization for these reasons. Any statement or petition should clearly state that it is on behalf of a student-led group or initiative and it may not use the Yale Law School branding.

  • Logos & Merchandise

For any student groups interested in using the Yale name or trademarks, updating their logo design, or purchasing merchandise/swag, review and follow the policies and procedures set forth on the Communications and Licensing page.

  • Unauthorized Practice of Law

While students and student groups sometimes engage in projects with outside organizations to gain experience in law-related work, under no circumstances should students engage in the unauthorized practice of law.
